Kept Privacy Policy
This policy is written in plain English rather than legal language. It describes what Kept does with your information, which is very little, and it is honest about the things Kept does not protect.
The app
Kept: Receipt & Document Vault helps you keep the paperwork that costs you money when it goes missing. It saves receipt images and tracks their return windows and warranty dates, and it saves expiring personal documents — vehicle insurance, vehicle inspection (ITP), road tax (rovinieta), home insurance, service contracts, and anything else you choose to add. Kept warns you before a return window, a warranty, or a document expires, and it can export and import a local backup.
Local-first design
Kept is designed to keep your vault on your Android device.
- Kept does not require an account.
- Kept does not provide a Kept cloud account or Kept server backup.
- Receipt images and document images are stored in app-private storage on your device.
- Item and document details — including a document's issuer, subject, reference number, dates, and notes — are stored in a local database on your device.
- Text recognition runs on your device and only helps fill editable form fields when you add a receipt. Documents do not use text recognition at all.
- Reminder checks and notifications are local.
What Kept is not for
Kept has no app lock, so it isn't the place for ID cards, passports or driving licences.
Kept does not ask for a PIN, a password, or a fingerprint before it opens, and it does not encrypt its database or its images at rest. Anyone holding your unlocked phone can open Kept and read everything in it. That is a fair trade for a shop receipt or an insurance policy you would hand to a garage anyway. It is not a fair trade for identity documents, so Kept provides no identity-document type. Supporting them would first require an app lock, a real encryption-at-rest design, and a way to keep such documents out of backups. None of those exists today.
The document type list ends with a free-text "Custom" option, so Kept cannot stop you typing "Passport", and it does not try. Kept states the limitation once, here and in the app, and leaves the choice to you.
Photos and metadata
When you add a photo to a receipt or a document, Kept normally re-encodes it into a new JPEG before saving it. Re-encoding drops the metadata the original file carried, including any location your camera recorded. The exception is a photo Kept cannot decode: rather than lose it, Kept saves the original file as it is, with whatever metadata it contains.
Backups
Kept can export a backup ZIP file through Android's system file picker. That backup contains your receipt and document records together with their image files, which means it contains photographs of insurance policies and other documents as well as receipts.
You choose where to save that file. Depending on your choice, that location may be local storage or a storage provider such as a cloud drive app installed on your phone. Saving a backup to a cloud drive app places those images in that provider's storage too, under that provider's own terms and privacy policy.
Kept does not upload backups to a Kept server. Kept imports backups only when you choose a ZIP file through Android's system file picker.
Purchases
Kept Pro is processed by Google Play Billing. Google Play handles purchase processing, payment details, refunds, and purchase records. Kept stores a local cached entitlement state on your device so the app can remember whether Pro was unlocked.
Analytics and telemetry
Kept has no live analytics SDK in release builds. Release telemetry does nothing and uploads no events.
Debug builds used during development may log content-free event names locally to the Android log. That debug-only logging is not present in release builds.
Permissions
Kept may use:
- Notifications — to show local return, warranty, document expiry, and backup reminders when you enable them.
- Google Play Billing — to process the one-time Pro unlock through Google Play.
- Normal Android background scheduling — to run approximate local reminder checks.
Kept does not request camera permission, broad storage or media permissions, location, contacts, account access, or email/inbox access.
Data deletion
You can delete items and documents inside Kept. Deleting one removes its local record and its image files from Kept storage.
Uninstalling Kept removes the app's local data from the device. If you exported backup ZIP files, you must delete those files yourself from wherever you saved them.
